Hanging Limb or Leaning Tree After a Storm in Lakeland? Safe First Steps
Reviewed October 28, 2026
A storm has passed and a branch is caught over the driveway, or a tree looks different from yesterday. The first decision is where people can safely wait. Do not walk beneath a hanging limb to photograph the break or try to free it with a rope. Keep people and pets out of the affected area while the situation is assessed.
Check for electrical danger before arranging tree work
Lakeland Electric's storm guidance says to treat fallen power lines as energized and stay away. A tree touching a wire is not an ordinary cleanup job. Do not approach the tree, line or anything in contact with it. Report the hazard to the electricity provider responsible for that address and follow its instructions. For an immediate threat to life, call 911. Our website is not an emergency dispatch service.
Describe what changed from a safe location
When conditions allow you to observe from a safe place, note the address, whether the tree is on your property, what is beneath it and whether it blocks access. Explain what you can see: a hanging branch, a split, an unfamiliar lean or disturbed ground. A description helps a professional plan an assessment; it is not a diagnosis.
Do not climb, use a ladder against the tree or cut a partly supported limb. Tell the company about any suspected utility contact before discussing access. If you cannot obtain a photo safely, say so rather than moving closer.
A damaged tree is not automatically a removal
UF/IFAS guidance on restoring storm-damaged trees explains that some trees can recover, while trunk cracks, lifted roots and pre-existing structural weaknesses affect the decision. It recommends qualified arborist advice. Ask the evaluator to explain whether the immediate work is making a dangerous area safe, pruning damaged branches, assessing the tree further or removing it.
Use our emergency tree-work overview for the questions to raise with a provider. If the tree can remain, compare the proposed work with our tree-trimming guide. Do not accept a promise that a particular cut will make a tree stormproof.
Keep access and cleanup in the written scope
Once urgent hazards are being handled, ask which branches or trees are included, where equipment will travel and who will remove the debris. Keep a stump decision separate: cutting down a tree does not explain whether the stump, roots or grindings are included. Our stump-work checklist helps you ask about that next stage.
Before accepting a proposal, use the tree-company hiring checklist to check the provider's identity, qualifications, insurance and written scope. For a non-emergency connection with an independent provider, use our contact page.
